Eco-Design and Sustainability in Vivi Lamarre’s Woodworking Practices

Sustainability is not just a concept in my woodworking practice — it’s a core principle that guides every step of my design process. From sourcing materials to crafting high-quality creations, I prioritize eco-conscious methods that respect the environment. Here’s how my studio brings eco-design to life through reclaimed wood and thoughtful craftswomanship.

HOW CIRCULAR PRACTICES SHAPES MY DESIGNS

In my studio, nearly every piece I create — from jewelry and unique art pieces to custom wooden handles — is made using reclaimed wood. Through a circular collaboration with the local manufacturer Fabrique Allwood, I am able to salvage production offcuts from sustainably managed North American forests, giving these materials a second life.

This partnership allows me to work with beautiful, high-quality woods such as walnut, maple, and cherry, which would otherwise go to waste. By revaluing these discarded materials, I am able to transform them into meticulously crafted art and design objects, ensuring that no resource is wasted and each piece tells a story of sustainability and craftsmanship.

TURNING CONSTRAINTS INTO CREATIVITY : THE ART OF WORKING WITH RECLAIMED WOOD

Working with reclaimed wood comes with its challenges — irregular sizes, imperfections, and limited availability. These constraints can affect productivity, as each piece requires extra time and care to perfect. But within these limitations lies an opportunity for creativity.

Rather than creating from new lumber, I embrace the unique characteristics of salvaged wood, allowing them to inspire my designs. This approach minimizes waste while celebrating the beauty of natural materials. Every imperfection tells a story, making each creation truly one of a kind.

CRAFTING HIGH-QUALITY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN FROM ECO-CONSCIOUS MATERIALS

Eco-design in my studio is about more than just sustainability — it’s about achieving excellence without compromise. Reclaimed wood doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or aesthetic appeal. In fact, it allows me to craft pieces that are not only environmentally responsible but also timeless in their design.

From statement jewelry to sculptural wooden handles, my creations combine functionality with artistry. Each piece reflects my commitment to honoring wood as a valuable resource, transforming it into objects that elevate everyday life.
